In the video you will additionally see the Dutch apportion of Education, Science, Culture & Gay Emancipation, Ronald Plasterk. Some alternative politicians were receiving part, and multiform armed forces officers for the initial time. It was the busiest Amsterdam Gay Pride ever, with an estimated 600.000 visitors.

Thank god for the Netherlands. Gay Pride was so much fun last year.
Pfffff, religious shit are everywhere…. :S
Thanks, nispen.
Here in San Francisco we also had that same naming phenomenon in the 80′s. There was “Physicians for Human Rights” for what was nothing more than a group of gay doctors.
I did like “Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom,” whose acronym was pronounced like the word “baliff,” an officer in a court . I tried to look up the Dutch for this, but it required more letters than YouTube allows in a post
Those names were only a short time ago, yet they seem so quaint now. Progress?
LOL. It is not pronounced as if it were a true word, but by articulating each letter (as it is an abbreviation). It sounds like Say Oh Say. The organization stems from a period in which being gay was so taboo, that its name did not reflect its true purpose (some cynics may say it *does* ). The abbr stands for Cultureel Ontspannings Centrum (Centre for Culture and Relaxation).
summer: “you’d think even if private schools in US are so independant, discrimination is prohibited, isnt it.”
– As far as I know, a private school is like any other private organization: they are free to discriminate against gays or anyone else as they wish.
A *business* is a different matter: some states or cities have laws against discrimination, but in at least half the country you can be fired for being gay and a business can refuse to serve you for the same reason.
Funny, because we have our government pay for religious schools, and indeed, NOT a separation of church and state, hence many want to have ALL schools secular, Im FOR that.
But what you also say, is Bush wanted to get religion into public school system (wanting to get them to religious schools istead of public), and thats bad. Bush is a jerk lol.
LOL. I know what you mean. Its not pronounced the same way here, but really funny indeed
)
Mike, there is the difference. Private schools here get government money, so they have more control over the schools. BUT, if the law is not clearly defined, our Minister cant change it just like that. He needs to get parliaments majority to have the law adjusted. Many people would like ALL schools to be purely secular, btw, like in France. But you’d think even if private schools in US are so independant, discrimination is prohibited, isnt it. I dont know lol
summer: “… from the Dutch organization for homosexuals (COC) …”
LOL. Is that acronym pronounced the same way in Dutch as in English and does that particular word mean the same thing? That is too funny.
I should have said that *until recently* the government isn’t involved in religious schools. The Repubs and Bush have championed a system of vouchers which some public school children can take to pay for attending religious schools. My opinion is that this amounts to gov’t paying for religious education, which is not constitutional. What’s next — a Sub-secretary of Religious Instruction?
summer, to my knowledge, no student can be expelled from a public school for this reason, but as you say there is always the possibility of underhanded means.
Private (including religious) schools have always been very independent. As far as I know, they can expel a student for whatever reason they wish. Also our Secretary of Education would have no say at all in the matter because they are not run by the government.
Mike last comment
. For clarity, the schools talked about are evangelical christian schools who take advantage of the law. Most Christian schools here dont wanna do this.
The youth you see jumping on Plasterk’s boat, are from the Dutch organization for homosexuals (COC) giving him a petition about it.
Plasterk also says that the discrimination, also in schools, is not that direct anymore, people do it in underhanded ways, like eg saying ‘sorry, you dont fit in the team’. Its worse than direct discrimination, you cannot prove it.
Do students get expelled in US for the same reasons, and only at religous schools? I guess its the same thing here? I didnt know sometimes this happens here, that students get told they cant come out, otherwise they’d be expelled. It shocked me to hear about it.
Mike, its about the delicate balance between freedom of religion and discrimination. Currently the anti-discrimination law is formulated in such a way one can interpret it differently, which some religious ofcourse now do to keep homosexuality out of their schools. The law only needs a very slight change so that discrimination is almost impossible. Yes, the religious always find ways to push their discriminative views into law, just like in the US, where I know it’s a lot worse.
Hey Mike, yes, it was Plasterk’s/Ministry of Education etc, own boat. And your Dutch is good because the sign indeed says that. We have a law (and this is gonna be debated in parliament end of September this year) that a religious school can, on its religious basis, expell students when they express theyre gay, and gay teachers of such schools can be fired as well. There is a lot of debate and unrest about it and Plasterk says he wants to get rid of it. Whether he can, we’ll have to see.
summer- Thanks for posting this video.
Can you tell me– at 1:10 when Plasterk gets on the boat does the announcer say it is the boat of his own ministry? So the national Education ministry actually had a boat in the parade? Wow.
Also, does the sign on it say “Out of the closet/ out of the class”? So does this mean gay students face discrimination if they come out? It does happen here, but is not supposed to.
depfox, you’re more than welcome
i would love to go to amsterdams gay pride someday ;O)
